Oxbridge Varsity vs Pro Boxing (2 x 5 Picture Photo Essays)

with 5 comments

Whether it’s the well-to-do crowd at the annual Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity match or the Friday night boxing faithful at the York Hall London’s East End, the effect on people is always the same: we are transfixed.

I shot two boxing fights: the annual Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity boxing match and a Friday night pro fight put on by a well known promoter in London. Each event had its differences and similarities. Both were absolutely fantastic events to watch; there truly is nothing like being at ringside. Here are 5 pictures dedicated to each – the first 5 are from the Oxford vs Cambridge evening, the second 5 are the pro event.

Many thanks to Spencer Fearon and the Cambridge Varsity boxing team for making this happen.

  1. Hey Max,

Great pics, as usual. My favourite is the guy leaning back in the yellow room with his gloves in the air. Such an atypical “boxing” image, if you knwo what I mean [harry]. He’s making a pretty strong diagonal and it has that element of surrealism with us wondering what that chap is doing there in the corner. The top of the gloves also suggest a “heart-like” shape. I guess the atmosphere ringside is electric and noisy!

  2. Cheers very much Dan – yeah, the guy started pulling off all of these weird stretches in front of me, the lucky thing was that in the room at the time…

  3. Wow, a really great set Max. Agree with Dan about the guy stretching backwards image, it just sets the whole piece off in such an unusual way. Great perspectives and access. I love the audience picture as well, the Tom Cruise-look-alike watching on, bit of a class dimension there. It’s a great description of the event.

  4. Really nice pictures. I’ve never been to such a show but through your pictures I can now imagine how the atmosphere is. I agree with Dan. I also like the pictures before that one very much. Thanks.
